2 Ways to communicate and advocate for your career progression this month

Dear Wonderful Woman,
I hope you're well.
I've been thinking a lot recently about communication, as I have been preparing for my webinar on, The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Purpose-Driven Career Women. How you communicate can let your message be ignored, can be ineffective or it can be really powerful and effective. It can help you to achieve a goal, advance you in your career, or win you an opportunity to raise your profile.
I want you to think about a time that you needed to communicate something that was really important to you at work for example, your performance at work, your presentation on an important project or you asking for a promotion or salary increase.
When you think about those times when you were most successful. What did they have in common? Was it any of the following noted below:
- That you had practiced saying it out-loud
- That you had rehearsed what you'd say if there any questions
- That you were wearing clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident
- That you had created an environment where your message could be clearly understood without distraction
- That you took the time to get your energy up with a ritual or practice that energises you and helps you to feel confident
My point is, and I'm sure you know what's coming! Communication isn't just the things you say or the words that come out of your mouth. It's your whole presentation, physical, verbal, nonverbal, and energy. You can go through the motions and communicate something, but it is far more effective if you implement something from the aforementioned list.
Here are 2 tips to help you communicate with positive intention this month:
1 Commit to being in the game or don't play the game until you'll give it 100%!
A sports analogy is great in this context! So what do I mean? Truly be clear that you are committed to your message and believe that you can handle the potential outcomes of that message before you deliver it. If you deliver a message about something important in your career that you desire, and you don't get behind yourself and back yourself, you'll be the player that's on the bench the whole time because your coach can see you're not ready to give it your all. You need to be 100% all in! Because, I am sure that you know from your own experience what you're like when you're all in, and when you're pretending to be in the game! Ladies only be in the game if you're committed. As harsh as that sounds, that is the only way to get the results that you desire.
2 Don't just take their word for it - Use the Official Channels!
This! I hear this time and time again. It goes a little something like this, "My boss says that I'm doing a good job but that I don't have enough experience for a promotion. Or it's not the right time in the performance cycle. Or wait until the bonus round and yet they don't put you in for a bonus". I know it's so frustrating! You're hearing that they support your case, and they think you should get it, but "insert excuse HERE", there is an obstacle as to why you can't get what they make the noises about you being deserving of. Here is when I say, don't take their word for it, do your research, and use the official channel. So whether that's to complete a form stating your case and sharing it with your boss and a panel, whether that's meeting a certain performance rating which enables you to be considered for a salary increase, know what that process is. Gather your evidence and submit your case using the Official Channel. Always of course bearing in mind the list from before, when you were most successful at your communication.
It was world gratitude day yesterday. What are you grateful for today? I am grateful that you are on the mailing list and I get the opportunity to share with you tips to help you advance your career and build a career that enriches your life.
