Are you seeking a promotion?

Dear Wonderful Woman,
How are you doing?
I'm well.
You may be thinking about "career committing" this year, which is deciding to stay with your current company or organisation and going for career development, growth or a promotion.
One of your career goals for this year may be to get a promotion. I wanted to check in with you, about how are things going with making progress towards this goal.
Here are 4 things to consider when seeking a promotion:
1 How is the company doing?
They say that timing is everything! And I don't mean that you should just wait forever and never ask! However it is a good idea to do your research and to understand how is the company doing? Have other colleagues been promoted in the last 3-6 months? Because if the company is not doing well then or not expanding, then they potentially may not be able to promote you at this time even if you have everything in place.
2 Do you have the skills needed to gain the promotion role?
When you are seeking a promotion you will need to demonstrate skills that are different to your current job. Are you clear on the skills that are needed for the promotion role? Are you able to clearly demonstrate that you have the skills? Do you have examples in place to demonstrate that you can operate at a higher level? Have you got a copy of the job description and can you see if there are any potential gaps.
3 Are you being visible and taking the credit for your work?
Getting a promotion also involves making sure that you are visible within your organisation and that you are taking credit for your work. How visible are you in your organisation? Do you have any work to do on making sure that leaders and managers are hearing about the good work you're doing? Part of getting a promotion is about positioning and demonstrating your value to the company and its bottom line.
4 Have you communicated with your boss that you would like a promotion?
It's really important to communicate to your boss your career goals and if seeking a promotion is one of them then you should be open and tell your boss about this. Your boss can be a source of potential information and guidance in terms of opportunities to take on new responsibilities and in terms of when promotion opportunities may be coming. If your boss doesn't know then you can't gauge how helpful they will be in supporting you with this career goal.
If working towards a promotion is your career goal for this year and you're feeling a bit stuck, or you've been lacking in traction, then let's do it together!
