How cutting out snacking will help your gut

What is so important about reducing snacking?
Let’s dive right in!
We have something called the Migrating Motor Complex within our small intestine.
The function of the MMC is to clear debris into the large intestine!
As we eat, our food moves from our mouth, to the esophagus for swallowing, then to the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and finally rectum for evacuation. Along this way are different digestive enzymes, bile acids, and other motions to help break down food and absorb nutrients.
So why is the MMC so important? Not only is it removing debris, it is sweeping toxins, AND moving bacteria out into our large intestine where it is meant to be housed!
Here’s the really important part: it only turns on during periods of fasting.
Specifically, it turns on after about 90 minutes of consuming no calories. There are different phases to the MMC, and it’s important to get through Phase 3 which is the “active sweeping” phase!
This means allowing yourself at least 3-4 hours between meals.
- Focus on having really nutrient dense meals when you do eat that are full of fiber, protein & fats to keep you satiated until your next meal!
- Tea and coffee are fine as long as there are no added calories to it.
So we discussed how eating will turn this off, but what else can?
- Being in a sympathetic state! In other words: stress. Including stress reducing techniques in your day is very important.
- Drinking too much too quickly! That physical distention your stomach experiences from that much fluid activates something called “baroreceptors”, which indicate a meal to your body!
- Even artificial sweeteners: these bind to gut receptors, indicating a meal.
Why talk about the MMC?
If you are experiencing any digestive issues, this is an important place to start. Especially if you are dealing with any bacterial or yeast overgrowth, this is KEY!
Activating the MMC is actually a primary prevention against SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).
Some symptoms include:
- Bloating
- Belching
- Diarrhea, constipation, or mixed
- Numbness/tingling in extremities
- Rosacea/skin rashes
- Stomach feels full
