How does our environment impact our hormones?
Sep 26, 2022 3:01 pm
There are over 50 different hormones and related molecules that together regulate nearly every bodily process and are extremely critical to the function of almost every tissue and organ.
What can hormones regulate?
1️⃣ Metabolism
2️⃣ Tissue function
3️⃣ Development
4️⃣ Mood
… and so much more!
What if there was something in our environment that could interfere with these hormones? Is that even possible?
Short answer: yes.
There is a cluster of chemicals known as EDC’s (endocrine disrupting chemicals) that mimic or interfere with the actions of naturally occurring hormones in our bodies.
But there should be laws in place to protect us, right?
- The TSCA (Toxic Substances & Control Act) was passed in 1976, grandfathered in over 60,000 chemicals that were “presumed” safe, but never actually them tested for safety
- There are over 84,000 chemicals currently registered, with only 1% ever being tested for human safety
- Since the TSCA was enacted, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has banned only five existing chemicals
- Sadly, the EPA has to prove harm– but here’s the kicker– doesn’t have the authority to demand data to establish proof of harm
This is where we as the consumer are our own advocates, and must educate ourselves on clean products to reduce our exposure.
I recently had the honor of speaking on this topic in relation to these different chemicals affecting our fertility. Below is the link for the summit that starts today! And it’s completely free.
