SIBO & Histamine Intolerance

Do you experience any of the following histamine symptoms? ⬇️
- Bloating, acid reflux, abdominal pain after eating
- Post nasal drip with eating
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Headaches/migraines
- Eczema, itching, rashes, flushing
We often think of these symptoms as unrelated to what we are eating.
But in fact these can have everything to do with our meals and what’s occurring in our gut!
➡️ Let’s talk about the SIBO & histamine connection.
SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is a condition in which commensal bacteria have overgrown in a place where they shouldn’t be at all: the small intestine.
When this occurs, we experience symptoms that are very similar to IBS:
- Bloating (commonly feel the detention looks 6-9 months pregnant)
- Abdominal pain
- Irregular bowel movements (diarrhea, constipation, or a mix)
Other symptoms that can occur:
- Multiple food sensitivities
- Joint pain
- Excess gassiness
- Feel food “sits in stomach”
- Acid reflux
- Fatigue
How do histamine symptoms relate to SIBO?
The small intestinal lining contains a glycoprotein layer that is protective and contains many digestive enzymes embedded within it. These are key for digestion, as they actually help in that final stage of digestion- particularly for carbohydrates.
An enzyme called DAO sits on that lining, and the job of this enzyme is to break down histamine.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) damages the intestinal lining and many of these structures and their functions.
This is why in SIBO we see a decrease in DAO therefore a decrease in our ability to break down histamine! Resulting in the above histamine symptoms.
What occurs next is that our liver tries to break down the histamine, but since the gut isn’t able to help then the liver becomes overwhelmed and can result in a decreased detoxification capacity (specifically to phase 2).
This is why treating SIBO is actually a precursor to supporting liver detoxification! We can’t properly detoxify if our gut is not optimal.
Certain foods many of my patients will react to with histamine intolerance:
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Bananas
- Avocados
- Fermented or aged foods
- Soy
- Chocolate
- Tahini
- Citrus
- Legumes
Oftentimes with an underlying gut issue, it can feel like we just have multiple food sensitivities. Identifying which foods are causing the reaction can be a huge signal as to what is occurring in the body and how to support it!
