Top foods for gut health

Jan 23, 2023 4:01 pm

Every time we eat, we are actually feeding trillions of bacteria that make up our gut, specifically that make up our gut microbiome. Ideally, we should have anywhere between 300-400 types of these bacteria. But unfortunately due to processed foods and lack of fiber, we see less than this in many individuals.

This loss of critical microorganisms and diversity of them can lead to poor gut health, which can result in:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Acid reflux
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Skin rashes

In order to restore balance to our gut microbiome, we need to include plenty of fiber, which is what those good gut bacteria like to feed on. Harmful bacteria can outgrow the good bacteria if we don’t include enough fiber, and even start to compromise the gut barrier function.

This is what ultimately leads to those above symptoms.

Below are my top foods that we should be including in our diet that supports gut barrier function as well as being beneficial for those good gut microbes.

1.Chia & Flax Seeds

These seeds are a rich source of prebiotic fiber, meaning they directly feed those good gut bacteria because our body can’t physically digest it.

2. Barley

This is a grain that doesn’t get enough attention! Barley has unique properties in that it’s rich in something called beta-glucan, which has been show to promote the growth of those healthy gut bacteria

3. Broccoli

Sulforophane is a compound found highest in broccoli!

It aids in repairing a compromised gut barrier by stimulating the formation of the junction between the cells that line that gut lining.

4. Wild Blueberries

The antioxidant content in wild blueberries compared to regular are twice as much, which is even more power in protecting our body’s against inflammation. Research has shown that wild blueberries can increase a class of gut bacteria known as Bifidobacterium, which exerts positive health effects on our gut
