The link between SIBO & MCAS

Have you heard of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome? ⬇️

It’s a condition where our mast cells are continuously releasing chemicals (the most well known one is histamine) resulting in a wide variety of symptoms.

  • GI symptoms
  • Chronic fatigue/exhaustion
  • Muscle/joint pain
  • Anxiety
  • Urinary tract symptoms
  • Painful periods
  • Heart palpitations
  • POTS
  • Food sensitivities
  • Extremity numbness/tingling/burning

➡️ What are mast cells?

Mast cells are a type of white blood cell, so they're our body's first line of defense. They line every part of our body, except for the retina. Because of this, MCAS can create a wide variety of symptoms!

How do they get dysregulated?

Our body gets overwhelmed with stressors, toxins, pathogens... and crosses a threshold we can't keep up with.

Once we hit that threshold, our body isn't functioning normally and biochemical changes occur as a protective mechanism.

So the mast cells dial up to protect us. As an effect, we start holding onto toxins, decrease Vit D, and methylation decreases.

Ultimately, it’s due to chronic inflammation that’s over stimulating them.

➡️The reason why chronic SIBO, SIFO, Lyme, and reactivated EBV occur

Because of this response: if we have a lot of pathogens, we don't want to knock out that histamine response because the mast cells are what's keeping it at bay.

This is why only doing antihistamines can make it worse. It can knock out the body's immune defense entirely.

Resulting in an inability to fight off pathogens, viruses, etc!

Some triggers for MCAS:

  • High histamine load bucket
  • Mold toxicity
  • Chemical toxins
  • Trauma/stress

The goals for treating MCAS should be slow and steady. Work on getting out of this mast cell response and identify any triggers.

Working on limbic system retraining and vagal nerve stimulation are key here!

Keeping a food journal is also helpful, as this can identify responses to high histamine foods or others that are triggering a response.
