Why avoiding BPA is important for gut & overall health

Good news: what you eat can potentially help negate the harmful effects of BPA.
Did you know that we can literally turn on or off specific genes in our cells by our environment?
This field of study is called epigenetics. I could get pretty nerdy on this topic, but we’ll keep it light for this newsletter. ☺️
Everyday, we are exposed to hundreds of chemicals. But what we eat can quite literally protect us from harmful effects of these!
Let’s talk about BPA for a second:
Bisphenol-A is a known hormone disrupting chemical, that has been linked to:
- Behavioral issues in children
- Metabolic disease
- Obesity
- Disrupting gut health
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
We can find BPA in plastics, thermal paper, “to go” coffee lids, canned foods, even dental sealants!
Of course, doing our best to reduce exposure is important: opting for glass/stainless steel cups, fresh foods & not accepting cash register receipts are small things that add up over time.
But, studies are now finding what we eat can also protect us from the effects of different environmental toxins!
This study was done in mice, but it’s very interesting: mice exposed to nutritional supplementation of folic acid, Vitamin B12, choline and soy blocked the impact of BPA compared to mice who weren’t given those supplements.
Why would this be? Those nutrients support our body’s liver to detoxify and are in fact “methyl donors”, and methylation is what is regulating the expression of our genes (turning “on” or “off”)!
Another fun fact- practices like meditation can actually shut down genes associated with inflammation in the body!
If this wasn’t enough to convince you to practice de stressing techniques and eat more vegetables… 😇
Some of my favorite tips to support your body:
- Daily meditation
- Avoid alcohol
- Eat cruciferous veggies
- Include high quality protein sources
- Vitamin C rich foods
- B vitamin sources: grains, leafy greens
