Heavy metals, plant based diet & pumpkin puree recipe

Hi there,

You have probably heard the words "heavy metals" used quite a bit.

Heavy metals are compounds that tend to be toxic to our bodies, even at low concentrations. They are found throughout different products, and unfortunately they are not regulated by the FDA.

This is why when you are looking into a product to buy, it's extremely important to request the company's Certificate of Analysis which will show you their third party heavy metal testing. If the company is very transparent, they'll most likely already have it posted on their website.

These items are the sources in which heavy metals tend to be highest:

  • Rice
  • Cacao/chocolate
  • Protein powders
  • Matcha/teas
  • Mushroom extracts
  • Fish

Rice tends to be high in arsenic. There are very few brands that I trust with low concentrations of arsenic, but the best one is Lundberg Farms.

Ways to reduce arsenic in your rice:

  1. Soak your rice overnight, then rinse and drain it
  2. If you don't have time to soak, wash a few times before cooking
  3. If you cook your rice with 10 parts water, and 1 part rice you will reduce arsenic by 60%
  4. If you cook your rice with 6 parts water, and 1 part rice you will reduce your arsenic by 40%
  5. California grown rice tends to naturally have less arsenic in the soil
  6. Basmati rice typically contains less arsenic than other types

Protein powders tend to contain lead and cadmium. On average, certified organic protein powders tested 2x higher for heavy metals.

75% of plant based protein powders test positive for lead.

My personal favorite brand is Nuzest. They are completely transparent and actually do third party heavy metal testing.

Cacao/chocolate tends to test highly positive for lead and cadmium. 1 tablespoon could take you over the CA Prop 65 level for lead.

I personally like to order mine from Santa Barbara Chocolate. This company tests the lowest for heavy metals.

If I am shopping at a local food store, I will buy Alter Eco. This company also tests low.

Matcha and various teas tend to test positive for lead. This is due to the region it is grown in. Not only heavy metals, but many teas test positive for mycotoxins and pesticides.

Pique tea is the cleanest company and they have a variety of different teas. I personally use their sun goddess matcha.

Another fabulous company is Encha tea for their matcha.

Mushroom extracts are a big source of lead. Mushrooms can absorb heavy metals from the environment they are grown in. When they are concentrated down into extracts is when the heavy metal amount rises.

The only brand I use and trust due to their third part testing is Real Mushrooms. Most mushroom extract companies don't even use the real mushroom, they use myceliated grain alternatives. This company contains no grains or starch fillers.

Fish may contain mercury, PBC, and dioxins. I personally do not eat fish, especially due to the amount of environmental toxins that tend to accumulate in them.

If you do eat fish, the lower mercury fish are: salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and herring.

Plant based diet

This lifestyle is the best for reducing your exposure to environmental toxins and heavy metals. Unfortunately, most animal products bio accumulate toxins throughout their life, so we get such a concentrated source of it.

95% of dioxin exposure is through animal products.

This diet is also full of antioxidants and extremely anti-inflammatory. This provides our body with the hydration, fiber, and phytonutrients our body's detox organs thrive on. This is extremely important for eliminating these toxins in our body.

Lastly, filtering our water is important because there are over 200 + contaminants in the water supply. These range between fluoride, antibiotics, environmental toxins and more.

The best filter to use is the Berkey because it filters all these contaminants!

Home made pumpkin puree

I love making my own because it reduces exposure to BPA found in the lining of cans! It's so easy too. All you need is 1 organic pumpkin!

Method:

  1. Wash and cut the pumpkin in half. Take out the seeds.
  2. On a baking sheet, lay the 2 halves face up
  3. Bake at 400F for 1 hour
  4. Let cool after it's done baking.
  5. Scoop out the insides and place into a high speed blender.
  6. Add 1/4 cup organic soy milk
  7. Blend until smooth!

Works super well in a variety of recipes! I recently used it for this gluten free plant based pumpkin bread! Topped with salted almond butter. For the recipe, visit my instagram @wfpb_doctor.
