Toxic cleaning supplies contributes to gut & hormone imbalance
Mar 19, 2023 6:16 pm
Did you know that the cleaning products in your home can cause hormone imbalance, gut issues, and allergies?
➡️ One of the big ways it contributes to these health issues is through contaminating our indoor air, leading to ingestion and inhalation of these.
In fact, studies now show the main method we are exposed to these chemicals is through those methods, not skin contact!
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has estimated indoor air to be 2-5x more toxic than outdoor air! Due to these conventional cleaning products getting trapped in our air and dust.
Quoted from the EPA’s website: “ Indoor air concentrations of some pollutants have increased in recent decades due to such factors as energy- efficient building construction (reduces adequate air exchange) and increased use of synthetic building materials, furnishings, personal care products, pesticides, and HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS.”
The American Lung Association even states “ chemicals released when using cleaning supplies contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and headaches.”
Many chemicals in these products are known carcinogens (benzene, toluene, formaldehyde) and release Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons which are also carcinogenic.
One very well known component found in most conventional cleaning supplies are phthalates and their job is to bind scents, making the smell last longer and be more pronounced.
From the study by Yu Wang et al. “A Review of Biomonitoring of Phthalate Exposures” showed “a significant association between phthalate exposures and adverse reproductive outcomes in women and men, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, overweight/obesity, allergy, and asthma”.
And finally (as if this wasn;t enough already) they’ve been linked to disrupting our gut microbiome:
- Influence gut microbiota
- Increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut)
- Inducing oxidative stress
This was a huge missing piece in my own health journey, which is why I address this with every patient of mine.
Do you want to learn more about these?
I will be going live on Kathy Hester’s YouTube show tomorrow morning at 10am PST to discuss all this, what swaps you can make, and more!
