More sets, not volume, for more muscle

Got this question again yesterday:

Workout 1:

- 10 reps

- 100 lbs

- 1,000 lbs lifted

Workout 2:

- 5 reps

- 130 lbs

- 650 lbs lifted

Workout 2 is almost half the volume, your app is trash!

Not quite.

Muscle gain is not about "volume load" (how many pounds total you lift in one workout). It's about how many hard sets you do.

So if you do a set of five, a set of 10, or a set of 15, you would think the volume may be two to three times higher with higher reps.

But actually, all 3 are just as effective for building muscle, as long as you take them close to failure.

Bottom line, don't worry about volume load. Just make sure your sets are hard, and you increase sets over time.

And of course, Dr. Muscle automates that for you.
