Myth as Medicine Week 2 Video and Activities

Apr 03, 2023 11:56 am

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for a really gorgeous evening once again. I'm really enjoying the collective energy of the group and am excited about how things develop over the coming weeks.

I'm going to send the story activities and links now, as the video needs a quick edit before I send it out.

Story activities:

Honouring the wild tracker women

Find the tracks of a wild animal.

What is it? How many toes/what size are its claws/how long is its step?

What was it doing in that spot? When did it walk there?

Finnegas' seven years at the Pool

Find a sit spot. Spend at least five minutes there and see what you notice. Take seven sit spots during the course of myth as medicine. See what changes each time.

Seek a Poetic Mentor

Find a poem to share. Find a poetry collection to share in group chat.

Muse the wisdom of Salmon and Hazel

Why is the salmon the carrier of wisdom in the tale? Why is the salmon held sacred?

Likewise, what is the potency and power of hazel (shedding the nuts of knowledge) and oak (the associated tree of the druid). How do hazel and oak differ and potentially compliment each other?

The fated gift of seeing

Journal about a time when you were gifted with knowing, insight, true seeing. No through study but through more of a eureka experience. What were the conditions of that learning? How does it relate to Finn and the salmon?

Optional Ogham

Investigate the old 'tree ogham' scripted language. Sketch the initials to your name....or write something more creative through Ogham. Find the image for your favourite tree.

Other sources for Finn and Fianna tales

Marie Heaney: 'Over Nine Waves' is a classic collation of Irish stories which includes the 'Finn cycle'

Celtic Myth and Legend by Charles squire is a hefty text which is available free online:

https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cml/index.htm

Daniel Allisons: 'Finn and the Fianna' offers a more contemporary interpretation on the tales

I've got a few more links of commentary on the story, but think I'll wait until the end of the week to send them out.

Video following soon!

Thanks

Dougie
