Scattering Ashes, a free short story, is on my website

Plus a fan girl review of X-Men '97

Excuse me if I squeal like a fan girl for a moment.

I'm a big X-Men fan. The very first stories I wrote as a teenager were (admittedly awful) fan fiction of my friends and I becoming part of the mutant superhero team.

My absolutely favorite character of all time has always been Nightcrawler. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, he's a demonic-looking German with the power to teleport. He's always had a strong religious faith, which contrasts with his appearance, but what really sets him apart is his heart of gold. When the odds are against the team, he's the one who charges forth with an optimism that most of us couldn't maintain in the best of times.

Before X-Men '97, the shows and movies done about Nightcrawler have generally focused on his religion or his goofy acrobatic nature, but they've never captured his real charm.

That all changed this week when X-Men '97 dropped an episode with Nighcrawler fighting with swords, including one in his prehensile tail. You can check a short clip out for yourself below (warning, some mild spoilers for the show if you haven't seen the series yet).

Nightcrawler fighting with three swords in X-Men '97. My teenage heart is so happy.

In current writing news, I'm thrilled with the response to my release of Curse of the Library. As of this writing, I'm sitting at 26 reviews with a 4.7 star average. Thanks for putting it at the top of your heavy TBR piles so quickly, and extra special thanks to those who have left a rating or review. You guys are the best!

For this newsletter's free short story, I went back to my early drafts of Curse of the Fae Library. I originally was going to start the story on a much sadder tone, but then changed it so Rosalind wouldn't be so overburdened at the beginning of her story. In this version, you can see how her father's death affected both her and her brother Jason. Here's the prequel short story, Scattering Ashes.

Camas flowers are currently in bloom here in Oregon, so I included this personal picture so you'd know what they'd look like in the story.

Do you love X-Men too? Or have you read my latest book release? Don't be shy. Send me a line at [email protected].
