Some Magic in a Time of Isolation

image

I grew up in southern Idaho. It's not what anyone would call a "happening" place. Our house was so rural, we didn't so much run around the neighborhood as we did the gigantic backyard. During the summer, my busy parents could only take me to three places: my grandma's house, piano lessons, and the library.

The library became my means of escape to a boring summer. Sure, I could call up a few friends, but that would tie up the landline, which meant no one could use the Internet. (Heh, showing my age a little.) I had to entertain myself. So in between goofing around with my siblings, stacks and stacks of library books filled my summer days.

Staying at home due to COVID-19 brings me back to those quiet days. I can't go the library now because our local one closed, but the Internet makes it easy to find new free books to read. If you're on this list, I'm sure you're doing the same thing.

As I ramp up to launch the Magic of Nasci fantasy series, I'm getting involved in free fantasy book promos. You already have my short story, but please check out these others for quality entertainment. Lots of big and small name authors understand how isolating this time can be and are giving away their hard-earned words for free:

Magic & Adventure runs until April 18th. It's a nice hefty promo with free ebooks ranging from epic to urban fantasy, with a splash of mystery and romance too.

Lighthearted Fantasy Reads runs until May 1st. If you're looking for a fantasy story rated PG-13 or lower, this selection of upbeat fantasy is for you.

I'll continue to list free promos as this situation drags on. Without a backlist of books to offer myself, I hope this brings you even the smallest amount of comfort during an uncertain time.

What's been the best book you've read the last few weeks?

I'm always looking for the next new book to add to my stack! Let me know what you've read recently that you just love by emailing me at [email protected]. I'm particularly fond of all flavors of fantasy, but I also love nonfiction that helps me understand people and society (think Malcom Gladwell's body of work).
