The Secret to Mastering DET Writing

Hi, Teacher Luke here! 👋

Today, I want to talk about two essential factors for success on the Duolingo English Test (DET) writing questions: Content and Discourse Coherence.

When tackling the writing sections, it’s not just about using correct grammar and vocabulary. Your answers need to be sharply focused and directly address the question on the screen.

You should aim to answer all parts of the question clearly and effectively. Let’s look at a sample question to see this in action:

Sample Question:

"Some people believe that schools should teach practical skills like cooking and personal finance, while others think schools should focus only on academic subjects. What is your opinion? Provide reasons and examples to support your answer."

Model Answer:

Schools should teach practical skills alongside academic subjects because these skills prepare students for real-life challenges. For instance, cooking classes can help young people develop healthy eating habits, and personal finance lessons teach students how to manage money responsibly. Academic knowledge is important, but practical skills ensure students are ready for life beyond the classroom.

Why This Works:

  • Content: The response clearly addresses the prompt and includes specific examples (cooking and personal finance) to support the argument.
  • Coherence: The ideas flow logically, with each sentence building on the main point.

Now let’s make it even stronger by adding a personal example:

"Can you provide an example where learning a practical skill in school significantly impacted someone's life?"

Model Answer:

During high school, my cousin took a personal finance class where she learned about budgeting and saving. After graduating, she used these skills to avoid debt while paying for college and later saved enough to start her own small business. The practical knowledge she gained in school gave her the confidence and tools to succeed in adulthood.

Why This Is a Good Answer:

  • Content: The example is specific and relevant, directly tied to the prompt.
  • Coherence: The story flows from learning the skill to its positive impact, making it easy to follow and engaging.
