Hi 👋 Teacher Luke here,
Most people find it hard to get a high score on the Duolingo English Test's speaking questions.
But, here's a tip 👉 use a range of English vocabulary.
And, one way to show range is to use idioms.
Why idioms? Well, if used correctly, they show you've got a deep understanding of English.
You're also proving you can speak English naturally and fluently.
So, in this email, I've got 5 easy-to-use idioms for you. They're perfect for most speaking questions and will help you sound like a pro.
👇 Let's dive in!
1 - To hit the ground running
To start something successfully or enthusiastically.
Example: "When I started my new job, I hit the ground running by taking on challenging projects."
2 - To get the hang of something
To learn how to do something well.
Example: "It took some practice, but I finally got the hang of Korean pronunciation."
3 - To go the extra mile
To make more effort than is expected of you.
Example: "For my sister's birthday, I went the extra mile and got her Taylor Swift tickets."
4 - To go back to square one
To start something over again because the first attempt failed.
Example: "After finding bugs in my programming project, I had to go back to square one."
5 - To turn over a new leaf
To make a fresh start or change behavior positively.
Example: "I decided to turn over a new leaf and reduce my time on social media to improve my mental health."
Use idioms like these in your speaking answers to show a high level of English vocabulary. They're versatile and can fit into various topics!
Pro Tip: Practice using these idioms in different contexts to make them a natural part of your vocabulary.
