Jan 08, 2025 4:01 am

Hi friends, Teacher Luke here 👋

The speaking questions are a major part of the Duolingo English Test, so knowing how to approach them is essential.

Here are 3 simple and effective tips to improve your speaking score:

1. Expand Your Vocabulary

Vocabulary variety is key! Using advanced words and phrases will help you sound fluent and confident.

Here’s how to boost your vocabulary:

1️⃣ Replace simple words with synonyms:

  • BigEnormous, massive
  • GoodBrilliant, impressive
  • SadMiserable, depressed

2️⃣ Add idioms:

  • “To get the hang of (something)”
  • “To hit the ground running”

3️⃣ Use phrasal verbs:

  • “Look forward to”
  • “Run out of”
  • “Turn down”

2. Use Complex Grammar

To score high in grammar, you need to mix simple and complex sentences. Simple sentences alone won’t cut it. Complex grammar shows variety and skill.

For example:

  • Simple: The story was interesting. The story was unique. I enjoyed it.
  • Complex: Since the story was both interesting and unique, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Try using:

  • Relative clauses: “The book was about zombies, which is something I’m fascinated by.”
  • Adverb clauses: “Although I was busy, I made time to read it.”

Practice creating sentences that combine ideas. It’s a quick way to elevate your answers.

3. Organize Your Answer

Organizing your answer makes you speaking smoothly and can help you speak for longer. Aim for 60–90 seconds to maximize your score.

Here’s how to organize your answer:

1) Use transition words: “Firstly,” “Moreover,” “Finally.” These keep your response organized.

2) Expand your answers: Add reasons and examples. For instance:

Basic: “I enjoy reading.”

Expanded: “I enjoy reading because it helps me relax and learn about new topics, like history or science.”

3) Take your time: Speak clearly and confidently. Pauses are fine—just stay on topic!

The longer and smoother your answers, the better your fluency score.
