Today's the day—the three major 2024 updates to the Duolingo English Test go live! 😮

1. Introducing "Interactive Writing"

Here's the most exciting update, in my opinion: Interactive Writing is replacing the old writing question. This change will give you a structured format and more time to show off your English skills.

Interactive Writing involves 2 steps:

Step 1: You read a question and spend 3 to 5 minutes writing your response.

Step 2: You receive a new yet related follow-up question, giving you another 3 minutes to expand on your answer.

I plan to make a lot of YouTube videos covering this new question type very soon, so don't worry if you're feeling nervous about it.

2. Introducing "Fill in the Blanks"

This is the second new question type!

Fill in the Blanks challenges your vocabulary and grammar skills. Here’s what you need to know 👇:

• Sentences will appear with one incomplete word.
• Your task is to complete the missing part of the word by typing in the missing letters.
• You have 20 seconds to complete the word.
• Expect to see between 6 and 9 sentences in total.

Even though it might look simple, this question type can actually be pretty tricky, especially with just 20 seconds per question. I recommend practicing a lot to get comfortable with the quick pace and how it all works.

3. A New "Read and Select"

The Read and Select format has been updated.

Starting today, you will see each word one at a time. Your job is to decide whether it's a real English word or not.

• You will encounter between 15 and 18 words.
• You have only 5 seconds to select Yes or No.
• This question type will appear first on the exam.

This update aims to make the test more engaging and efficiently gauge your vocabulary skills, especially under time pressure.
