You might be wondering: How does the Duolingo English Test (DET) look in 2025? Are there any big changes coming? 🤔

As of today, the DET remains exactly the same as it was in the second half of 2024. (Scroll down to see the full list of question types 👇).

However, I anticipate changes around April time, as that’s when DET typically updates the test. So, let's talk about these changes.

🧐 What changes in 2025?

One likely update is a brand-new Interactive Speaking question! 😮

You might have seen it on the official practice exam.

In this potential new question, you'll participate in a conversation with one of Duolingo's AI characters.

The character will ask you questions on a specific topic (e.g., education), and it seems that you'll have about 30 seconds to answer each one.

For example 👇

1. What are you currently studying?
2. What motivates people to learn new things?
3. Do you think the way people learn new things has changed?
4. Do you think distance learning is effective?
5. How do you think technology will change the way people learn?

I don’t know much about this new speaking question yet or when it will be added to the exam. However, as soon as I learn more, I’ll share it with you!

✅ List of Current Question Types (January 2025)

If you are planning on taking the exam soon, then here’s what the DET looks like (as of today):

• Read and Select: 1 set of 15-18 words
• Fill in the Blanks: 1 set of 6-9 sentences
• Read and Complete: 3-6 times on the test
• Read Aloud: 3-6 times
• Listen and Type: 4-9 times
• Interactive Listening / Summary: 2 times
• Interactive Reading: 2 times
• Write About the Photo: 3 times
• Speak About the Photo: 1 time
• Interactive Writing: 1 time
• Read, Then Speak: 1 time
• Listen, Then Speak: 2 times
• Speaking Sample: 1 time
• Writing Sample: 1 time
