During the Duolingo English Test, you're likely to be asked to express your opinion on a topic. While saying "in my opinion" is completely acceptable, here are some alternative phrases:

• In my perspective,

These phrases offer variety in your language use, allowing you to express your opinions more than once without being repetitive.

Example

To score high on the writing section of the test, you should develop and extend your ideas – not just state them! Here are some phrases you can use to expand your thoughts:

• Additionally,
• Moreover,
• Adding to my previous points,
• Not only, but also

Using these phrases shows the examiners your ability to discuss your opinions comprehensively in English.

Example

Not only is fast food unhealthy for children, but it can also cause serious health issues.

3. Phrases for Giving Examples

To illustrate your points more clearly, it's great to provide examples. While the phrase "for example" is useful, you might want to switch it up with:

• For instance,
• To give a clear example,
• A clear example of this is
• To illustrate,

Example Sentences

A clear example of this is heart disease. Since children who eat a lot of fast food are more prone to heart-related health issues later in life.

4. Phrases for Setting Conditions

Sometimes, your answers might need to express a condition or a dependent scenario. Here are some phrases you could use for that:

• As long as
• Unless

These phrases work in the same way as 'if' sentences, indicating that something should happen before something else can occur.

Example Sentences

Provided that children eat a balanced diet, having one or two fast food meals per week should not cause any health issues.

To end your response in an academic manner, you want to avoid phrases like "in a nutshell" as they are rather informal.

Instead, consider using one of these phrases:
