Let's talk about the production subscore.

👇 There are five question types that contribute to your production subscore, and they are all open response questions–meaning there is not a "correct" answer.

• Write About the Photo (three times on the test)
• Speak About the Photo (once on the test)
• Read, Then Write (once on the test)
• Read, Then Speak (twice on the test)
• Listen, Then Speak (once on the test)

Your answer will be evaluated by a grading engine. The Duolingo Test guide states that "The grading engine is trained to understand your English proficiency just like expert human raters."

The grading engine evaluates your answers based on the following criteria:

• Grammatical accuracy: The correctness of your grammar
• Grammatical complexity: The variety and level of your grammar
• Lexical sophistication: The level of vocabulary used
• Lexical diversity: The variety of word choice
• Task relevance: How well you answer the question that was asked
• Fluency: How much you can say or write in a limited time
• Acoustic features: The pronunciation and pace (speaking questions only)
