Follow these steps and you’ll save time, save money, and give yourself the best chance of getting the score you need.

1 — Know All the Question Types

The DET has 13 question types, but if you need to improve quickly, focus on the 7 speaking and writing tasks.

They have the biggest impact on your score and are the fastest to improve when you learn the right strategies.

3 — Practice Every Day

The DET is a fast test. You must read, listen, type, and speak quickly.

Use:

4 — Use Complex Sentences

For Interactive Writing and Writing Sample, try to include one complex sentence in each answer.

This is part of the scoring criteria and helps you reach a higher writing score.

Here are 3 examples:

1. Even though I prefer studying at home, I sometimes go to the library to stay focused.
2. Although the project took a long time, I learned many useful skills from it.
3. Since I moved to a bigger city, I’ve had more opportunities to meet new people.

Each sentence has:

• one main idea
• one extra idea
• a subordinating conjunction (even though, because, when, although, since)

These are perfect for DET writing because they show grammar range without sounding memorised.

5 — Improve Your Typing Speed

A lot of students type too slowly in English.

Practice for 10–20 minutes a day on a site like 10fastfingers.com — it will help a lot with writing and Listen and Type.
