August 15, 2021

Yes, it's been hot almost everywhere. I'm a weather wuss and pretty much stick inside where the ceiling fans and A/C keep me comfortable. There isn't much else new to report - I took a hard fall, hurting my shoulder and hip. Not able to spend much time on the computer for anything and my iPad just isn't conducive to writing at length.

Here's hoping your summer is going better than mine - looks like it might be the end of the year before Ventis & Victims is available. Sorry about that...hope you will stick around. I think you'll enjoy it. I'm including a preview snippet at the end of this newsletter.

Oh, and we have a TON of free books you can download this month...be sure to share with your family and friends who love cozy mysteries.

Anu Shankar has decided to start over. It's kind of hard for a 35-year-old who is stone broke and has no particular talents. But she has a plan...

Or at least she thinks she has. Anu has decided to move to a small Indian town and start a cooking channel on YouTube. Fun right?

Well, it is, until a dead body makes an unexpected guest appearance on her first video and drags her smack dab in the middle of a murky murder investigation.

To make matters worse, the video goes viral. And that is an issue because her viewers are not interested in learning the delicate art of cooking Indian food. They merely want to find out more about the murder.

So, what can poor Anu do but retire her ladle in favor of a detective hat, and jump straight into the mystery?

Excerpt from "Ventis & Victims"

“Chief, what the— Are you are serious?” Jay Delgado stammered in exasperation.

“As a heart attack. Bring him in for questioning.”

“You know he had nothing to do with this. It’s all coincidental.”

“Coincidence or not, he’s a person of interest. You’ve chalked off most folks from the suspect list, time to bring him in.”

Jay sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to win. “Okay, Chief, just know I’m doing it under protest.”

“Duly noted.” The Chief dismissed him with a nod.

Jay continued muttering as he walked into the break room where his partner Eleanor was waiting.

“So, what’s the verdict? The Chief drop it?”

Jay shook his head. “Nope. We still have to bring Garrett in for questioning.”

“Folks in the fire department aren’t going to be happy with us.”

She tossed her empty cup into the sink. “Now?”

Jay opened the door, following her out.”Not going to get any easier.”

The fire station was only a short walk from the police department. The duo was greeted by several firefighters as they headed towards the Fire Chief’s office. Vita Corelli’s desk was just outside the chief’s office and she held up her hand as they approached.

“Why are you here?” She demanded.

Jay hid his grin. Vita was well known as the gatekeeper for the chief. Her official position was admin to the chief but over the years she assumed the role of quartermaster for the department. She was the chief’s sister-in-law and ruled him as well as the entire fire department.

Eleanor nodded towards the closed door. “He in?”

Vita huffed as she repeated, “Why?”

Jay nudged Eleanor as he responded, “You’re looking mighty fine today Ms. Corelli.”

She stood up, her hands on her hips. “Flattery won’t get you through that door any quicker. He’s busy with the budget and won’t appreciate your dropping in unannounced. “

“I’m afraid we have some serious police business to discuss with him.”

“It’s important and time sensitive,” Eleanor at it.

Vita snorted. “You folks always think your time is more important than anyone else’s.”

Jay assumed a more serious look. “This time it is, Ms. Corelli. It has to do with the death of George Nikolaus.”

“Well, why didn’t you say so. Wasting my time like this. Like I said, my time is important, too.” She continued muttering as she punched the intercom buttons. “Officer Delgado and his partner are here to talk to you about George.”

“Send them in.”

Vita nodded towards the door before turning her attention back to the papers on her desk and muttering something about young whippersnappers, no manners, and lack of respect.
