Can Solar Power My Whole House?

1 min read

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the cost of fitting solar PV systems has decreased by 70% over the past 10 years. Business Tech reported that South African households imported over R2.2 billion worth of solar panels in 2022 alone.

So does this mean solar can power my whole house?

The simple answer is yes – solar can power your entire home. How much power you need is dependent on how much you use, but there is all the technology and equipment available on the market to power your home of any size purely with solar. As a general guide we will use the average household electricity consumption in South Africa. As per Eskom’s findings, this is 900kWh per month, or 30kWh per day. This would require about 7,5kW solar PV system. The table below helps to determine what size solar PV system your household needs.

It is generally estimated that a 7,5kW solar PV system will require 21 to 28 panels. This can differ widely depending on the wattage of the solar panels used.
