Don't Sell Yourself Short (Issue 30)

Hi Friends,

This week, I have been considering something I see myself do quite often - as a business owner, collegue, or even friend.

Specifically, it is to sell myself short.

Jordan Peterson (whose new book I am currently reading, Beyond Order), said this:

"Your life becomes meaningful in precise proportion to the depths of the responsibility you are willing to shoulder."

It's really difficult to take on more responsibility when in essence, you are afraid to value yourself at a higher level.

Here is a simple image to paint the picture: If I sell myself short in a client project (where I bend over backwards to make it work), at a certain point, I am unable to take on more responsibility.

Likewise, if I am unable/afraid (unwilling to shoulder the responsibility) to lead my team in a bigger and better way, I will sell myself short.

In Jordan's book, rule 4 is just that: Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated.

This was a great moment of 'insight!' It was so clear when I finally saw it. Taking more (or better) responsibility of my current circumstance will help me have a more meaningful life.

In essence, I am going to start by taking more responsibility for what is currently in front of me in work, life, and relationships. And I will start by not selling myself short. I will start by valuing my time, work, and relationships at a higher level.

Question: Is there an area that you are 'abdicating' responsibility? That might be the answer to bring more meaning and purpose into your day-to-day.

All in,

David
