Ultimate Test for Learning (Issue #26)

Hi Friends,

Wow, we are already a good six weeks completed into 2021.

One of my prime focuses this year is more exposure (as discussed in last week's newsletter) and a big part of that is reading more.

I've been able to consistently read one book a week for the start of this year.

I want to share a quick tip about learning.

Another part of exposure that is important is also teaching.

Said differently, the ultimate test of knowing something is being able to teach it.

This is the ultimate test of knowledge.

Teaching a family member, a friend, or a colleague is a great way to gauge your understanding of something. A few practical tips I find helpful when teaching to test my understanding:

  • Practice teaching a new subject within 24 hours of learning it: This will help you take new information and synthesize it quickly
  • Practice teaching a small part of the whole: Often new topics come with many different variables. Try teaching one part at a time.
  • Practice teaching it in less than 50 words: This test helps you explain something deep and make sure you outline the most profound parts, to test your actual knowledge of the subject
  • Practice teaching the subject 10+ days after you initially encountered it: This will help test what stuck and what you forgot. Ultimately showing you where you may still struggle to understand.
  • Practice teaching in front of a camera: Camera's are intimidating, even sometimes more than people. Try teaching a new subject to your iPhone camera.

My favorite finds this week

  • Interview: Joe Rogan & Naval Ravikant | If you have never heard of Naval, and enjoy listening to original thoughts, you are in for a treat. This lengthy (2+ hour) talk covers topics like politics, meditation, science, social media, and much more. There are definitely things I think differently about but believe it's great to hear such clear thinking.
  • Article: Solid Foundation to start thinking about Crypto | This interview with Naval Ravikant is also very interesting if you are trying to learn more about what crypto is and how it works. This is a segment of an interview Naval did with Tim Ferriss.
  • Article: Why everything is super low risk by Ali Abdaal | I enjoyed this article. It's a simple explanation that points to a few key things around risk, especially with most modern-day knowledge workers. Most of the stuff that is easy to be concerned about isn't a concern.

All in,

David
