Microflow: Enjoying repetitive tasks (Issue #24)

Feb 01, 2021 2:06 am

Hi Friends,

This newsletter will be a bit shorter than usual, but this was a fun one to write.

I've really settled into my new place this month and it helped me realize something valuable to my day I'd love to share with you: Microflow.

Flow can define here as a complete focus on what you are doing.

Microflow is the mental state of flow of immersion in various, mundane or repetitive tasks.

In Japan, it can be called, Ikigia, the happiness of always being busy.

This often occurs when a task is not too hard nor too each, but challenging enough to bring on a sense of attention and focus.

It can be associated with a creative outlet like painting and drawing and writing or it can be associated with other categories:

  • Dinner with the family
  • Reading/studying
  • Driving
  • In conversation
  • Really, anything.

A few benefits I've experienced are:

  • A greater sense of connection with the task at hand - whether it be making coffee, cleaning up, or going for a walk
  • A greater sense of emotional equilibrium - my morning routine is a place of microflow for me. It's a way I enter a chaotic day with confidence
  • A greater sense of performance - microflow works best with a dynamic that is a bit challenging, at the minimum. In that, microflow can help increase your performance in any task because you are more at ease

Charles Duhigg said that when you improve one area of your life, all other areas improve as well."

Questions to consider:

  • What part of your day can you a bit of slower pace and engage more with microflow?
  • What part of your day do you enjoy but miss because you are moving too fast?
  • Where can you add a bit of microflow to your morning?

My favorite finds this week

  • Article: What is flow? by Verywellmind.com | If you are looking to learn more about flow and what it is, this article is a great introduction to a psychologist's formal definition of flow.
  • Link: Typography explained in less than 10 minutes by Pangram Pangram Foundary | I absolutely love finding foundries and font's that impress. Here is a quick walkthrough of how type works.
  • Quote: from Ben Hardy in Personality isn't Permanent, "The more direct and clear the path, the more motivated you will be. Complexity kills motivation, which is why lasering in on one keystone goal changes the game."
  • Quote: from Paul Kalanithi in When Breath becomes Air, "I began to see all disciplines as creating a vocabulary, a set of tools for understanding human life in a particular way. Great literary works provided their own sets of tools, compelling the reader to use that vocabulary."

All in,

David
