Kenai is free!
Kenai, my award-winning space opera story, is free as an ebook until Friday. If you haven't read about Jess and the mysterious world of Kenai, please have a copy on me and enjoy! Here's a universal link to grab it no matter where you are in the world.
The book is also available as an audiobook and paperback (though not free in those formats) if you prefer to read that way.
A con!
If you happen to be in Greensboro this weekend (Oct. 4 & 5), you'll be able to find me at the Big Lick Comicon, where I'll be running a book table with accomplished author Mike Mollman. I've been on his Bald and Balding indie book show a couple times and hung out with him at WorldCon for a bit this summer, and he's a great guy. You should check out his books, which include both fantasy and sci fi.
Writing update
Sarah Estow and I finished the first draft of our romance novel, Best,. (Yes, the comma is part of the name, which comes from a semi-pretentious email sign-off that's very common in academic circles.). The book is currently 39 chapters plus an epilogue, or about 81,000 words. I'm very excited about this one. It's about two professors at a small liberal arts college who don't think much of each other but are thrown by circumstance into investigating a mystery on campus. We wrote it in alternating chapters starting back in May, each of us taking charge of one of the protagonists. I laughed out loud (literally) at multiple points in every one of Sarah's chapters, and I couldn't ask for a better writing partner and guide to the genre. It's been the most fun project I've taken on in a long while, and I look forward to polishing it up into something we can share with the world.
Sarah's hard at work revising another one of her novels now, so we probably won't get back to it until November, but we'll try to get it moving towards publication next year. We're not sure yet whether we want to go the traditional publication route (Sarah has an agent for her other books) or the indie route, but we'll figure it out. Watch this space for more info!
After a trip to see my oldest, who's finishing up a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I'm back home now and ready to continue work on my next Inquisitors' Guild novel, which is currently at about 16,000 words. I'm hoping to have a draft done before the end of the year, with a release date in the first half of next year, but there's a lot of work still to be done.
Some stories to try
I'm part of several author collectives, and we share each other's work to try to help all of us reach more readers. In many cases, the books we share are are free or discounted. Sometimes, they ask that you sign up for a newsletter like this one. Here are some new books I have to share this month:
First off, I have Neurahack by Kris Ruhler. This is the first book in a cyberpunk sci fi series called Project Juniper, about a dystopian future and a couple of young folks dipping into the underworld on a space station at the edge of humanity.
Second, I have Lost Heir of Azrith by Rowan Ashborne. It's a novella about a royal heir and an elf assassin in pursuit of magic artifacts to break the power of the empire threatening their kingdom. Sounds like great stuff! This is only $1.99 at the moment, so easy to have a look.
Next, I have a bunch of books that are free to Kindle Unlimited users. 42 books and series of many different genres, including mystery, sci fi, and fantasy (no erotica or bare-chested man torsos). You're sure to find something intriguing here.
Finally, I have an even bigger set of fantasy and sci fi books that are also free for Kindle Unlimited users. 73 books and series here from all sorts of authors. Have a look and find your next favorite book!
Thanks
Thanks so much for signing up for my newsletter. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for upcoming books! I love hearing from people. I hope you'll give Kenai a try (for free!) if you haven't read it yet.
Have a safe and rewarding last few months of the year!
May the Bloodmother watch over you -
Dave
