Accommodation Is a Bigger Sacrifice Than Many People Realize

After hosting my younger cousins for two weeks, I gained a deeper appreciation for people who opened their homes to me.

Hey ,

Last week, three of my younger cousins left my place after spending about two weeks with me.

And during that period, something became very clear to me.

It is not easy for someone to accommodate you.

Not even for one day.

Before they arrived, I prepared. I planned ahead. I stocked up the house more than usual because I thought I had everything under control.

But honestly, I was shocked.

The rate at which provisions were finishing surprised me. Food, toiletries, basic supplies, little things here and there. The difference was clear.

Now, this is not me complaining.

Far from it.

In fact, the entire experience made me deeply reflective and grateful.

Because while they were with me, I kept thinking about my own life growing up.

I remembered that after secondary school, and even during my school years, I spent more time at their parents’ house than at my parents’ place. I stayed there for years.

And I was not the only one.

Aside from their immediate family, there were always other people living in the house too. At some point, there were at least three extra people staying with them regularly.

Yet somehow, they made it work.

We ate.

We stayed comfortably.

We were accommodated without complaints.

I appreciated them before, but after hosting my cousins myself, that appreciation became deeper.

Because now I understand the sacrifice better.

Accommodation is not just about space.

It is about resources.

It is about adjustment.

It is about inconvenience.

It is about responsibility.

When someone opens their home to you, they are making sacrifices, whether they say it or not.

And it also made me appreciate my parents even more because they did the same thing for people too. For years, my parents accommodated people as well.

Looking back now, I realize that many of us have benefited from somebody’s sacrifice in one way or another.

Someone gave you space.

Someone fed you.

Someone adjusted their routine for you.

Someone made room for you when they did not have to.

Please do not take that lightly.

If there are people you once stayed with, appreciate them.

Send a message.

Make a call.

Tell them thank you.

Even if you only stayed there for a short period.

And if someone has ever accommodated you, even for a day, understand that it cost them something.

Gratitude matters.
