Celebrating Moms Through Art

“I’ve never had more appreciation for anyone in my entire life until I became a mom.” – Chrissy Teigen
As the Thurber household prepares to welcome our first baby (due end of July), we're feeling the fullness of life, the breadth of emotions, the weight of decisions, and the utter JOY of what it means to be parents.
“If you’re a mom, you’re a superhero. Period.” – Rosie Pope
So, if you're a mom, here's a big THANK YOU and a CHEERS for all you are and all you do! And if you're not a mom, go ahead and give that special lady the biggest hug ever.
Celebrating Moms Through Art
Here's what I've been up to in the studio this spring:
A heartfelt commission in watercolor and pencil...
This beautiful sparrow was made in honor of a little one who passed away in her momma's second trimester of pregnancy. A song called "Sparrows" was always on the radio, and it became her symbol. The purple flowers are taken from her receiving blankets. This portrait will remind mom, dad, and older sister of her memory.
Bereaved Mother's Day 2021...
I was honored to be a part of a Bereaved Mother's Day Virtual Conference on Sunday, May 1st. This special day is a nationwide recognition of the unique grief and needs of mothers who've lost an infant or child. My part in the conference was to lead the moms in making their own "Warrior Self-Portraits". We talked about how courage in the face of pain can look like many things. It's about not being tough and put together, but having the courage to ask for help, to grieve well, and to remain tender-hearted. That's true strength, and it was amazing to affirm these women for showing up and doing the work of healing, together.
“Mother is a verb. It’s something you do. Not just who you are.” – Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Happy Mother's Day to all the art-loving moms out there!
Sincerely,
