Other data scientists are not your competition

Linkedin is full of experts. Some are silent and let their titles speak for them, while others share their achievements with the world. I’m somewhere in the middle.

Most beginner data scientists feel intimidated by the achievements of those who are more experienced. The first thing I learned when I entered this field is to not compare myself to others.

Sure, sometimes the feeling creeps in—I see people landing Big Tech jobs easily or making 6- and 7-figure salaries, and I wonder if I’m doing enough. But instead of letting jealousy take over, I try to learn from them.

Creating content on social media has helped me do exactly that:

  • Share my knowledge while solidifying my own understanding.
  • Connect with like-minded professionals—data scientists, engineers, and AI enthusiasts.
  • Learn from others’ experiences, not just their successes, but also their struggles.

Healthy Competition vs. Toxic Comparison

It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly measuring yourself against others. But here’s what I realized:

  • There’s enough space for everyone. The industry is vast, and no two career paths are identical.
  • Skills matter more than titles. Just because someone has a prestigious job doesn’t mean they know everything.
  • Collaboration leads to more growth than competition. Some of the best opportunities come from partnerships, not rivalries.

How to Learn From Other Data Scientists Instead of Competing

  • Follow their work, but don’t compare your Chapter 1 to their Chapter 10.

Observe how they solve problems, write code, and explain concepts.

  • Engage with the community.

Ask questions, comment on posts, and share insights. You’ll be surprised how many are willing to help.

  • Build in public.

Whether it’s a project, a blog, or a LinkedIn post, share your journey. It attracts opportunities and feedback.

  • Find mentors, not competitors.

The best way to grow is to learn from those ahead of you. Most are happy to help if you approach them genuinely.

  • Give back.

No matter where you are in your journey, someone can benefit from your knowledge. Teaching solidifies your learning.

The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to “beat” other data scientists. It’s to become a better one.

The industry thrives on knowledge-sharing, and the best data scientists I’ve met aren’t the ones who hoard knowledge, but those who uplift others.

So, next time you feel imposter syndrome creeping in, remember:

  • The only real competition is with your past self.
  • Progress matters more than perfection.
  • You belong here.
