A couple weeks ago, I texted my best friend a message: "HOW did I not know this?"
The this was spy knitting.
As in, actual women knitting during the world wars as part of the resistance. Using the activity as cover while tracking occupying forces or literally encoding messages in the yarn.
What so astonished me wasn't the contrast between knitting's cozy reputation and its secret-agent use. It's that I blithely tapped knitting for my female protagonists to use as a code word when they have to keep a big secret from their oppressive wizard government ... and I had no idea about the real-life underpinnings.
But then, real life is always surprising me. There's so much that's already happened, I'll never know it all.
A sobering thought. But also kind of wonderful.
Because every day, I might learn some new "HOW did I not know this" fact.
Perhaps a few will make it into future books.
What cool historical facts do you know? Lay 'em on me by hitting reply: I want to know all the cool facts.
Oh, and enjoy this very nifty example of knitting by my mom. She's not putting secret codes in her creations ... that I know of. (If you want to break a secret code, check this out.)
