What do you get when you win the bidding for a custom fantasy romance story from me and give me pretty wide latitude?
Competitive ice dancers in their late 30s, apparently.
The auction in question, organized by FaRo Society, benefited PEN America, which works to protect the right to free expression. So I would have been happy writing a story to help out even if I didn't get to have a blast doing it.
But lucky me, I had a lot of fun writing the story of how Nik and JJ ice-dance their way to an HEA.
I appreciate auction winner Lexie for inspiring these best-friends-to-lovers and letting me share them with you.
Here's how Step Sequence begins, and where to grab it:
“Living the dream,” Nik said, letting herself fall onto a hotel bed that was so far from first-rate, it would need to hop a flight to get there.
JJ made a noise that began as a snort and ended as a groan. Then he dropped his skate bag and fwoomped onto the bed next to her.
“This is mine,” Nik pointed out, rubbing her sore neck because it was slightly easier to reach than either of her sore thighs. “Go crash on your own example of the best the 1970s had to offer the sleeping public.”
He groaned again.
“Jay,” she said, bumping his shoulder with hers. She was too tired to go to all the trouble of poking him.
“Nooo.” He said this into the arm he’d thrown over his face. “Don’t make me move. My knees hurt. And my hamstrings. And my left hip. And I can’t even cast a spell on them because we’re less than a week from Sectionals! Whose idiotic idea was it to try to make it to Nationals again? Also, this bed is from 1991.”
(Though if you're inspired to donate a few bucks to PEN America, that'd be lovely and please do.)
Oh! And on that note: Readers who bid on the many fantasy-romance items in the FaRo Society auction raised more than $8,000.
We participating authors were all really excited about that.
Not surprisingly, we like it when everyone can read the books they want.
If you bid on anything, win or lose, you helped fight book bans. Thank you for supporting the right to read.
And thanks again to Lexie especially.
