Hi, awesome readers! I've got some cool books to share with you and some answers to the One Question to Rule Them All from last time.
But first, I'd like to introduce you to this woman.
Her picture is the image in my head for Rosemarie Dane, one of the main characters in the Clandestine Magic series. Rosemarie's the chief strategist for a group of women pressing wizards for equal rights.
I'll go on and on about Rosemarie if you get me started, but it's the real woman in the photograph I want to tell you about. Her name is Hallie Quinn Brown, and she's posing for this picture sometime in the 1870s or '80s. Born before the Civil War to formerly enslaved parents, she lived to see women get the vote — more than that, she helped make it happen.
In addition to her work as an advocate for equal rights, she was a teacher, a noted lecturer who spoke frequently in Europe, a president of the National Association of Colored Women and one of the people who helped get the ball rolling on preserving Frederick Douglass' home in D.C.
Oh, and she met with Queen Victoria. Twice.
(I'm leaving a lot out. That's how much she did.)
What Brown and so many other determined women and men accomplished generations ago still ripples today. When this photo of her was taken, she had more than three decades of work ahead of her before American women (at least in theory) would win the vote.
You can tell from her expression that she was more than ready for the challenge. No magic spells required.
Cheers,
Colleen
P.S. What person from history do you think deserves more attention? Let me know. 👀
P.P.S. One of those cool books I mentioned earlier is A Witch Called Red, about a demon-hunter witch who teams up with a punk-rock vampire. Love the description: "Like the Vampire Diaries had a love child with the show Supernatural." It's free to read in Kindle Unlimited.
P.P.PS. The One Question to Rule Them All is from Julie at One Book More, who asked, "If you had magical ability, what would you most like to do with it?" I posed that to you all. Popular answers: Healing powers, telekinesis and communicating with animals. (Best write-in answer: "I'd love the magical ability to control myself!")
P.P.P.P.S. About those ✨ free books✨: If you're looking for fantasy stories, here's a new giveaway to check out with books ranging from a heroic grim reaper to a dark fairy with dream powers. Looking for romantic books to read in Kindle Unlimited? Got you covered there, too.
