I've got a deadline to finish the final draft of Numinous Fortune this week, and things have been heating up in more ways than one throughout these final chapters. Augustin just dropped a bomb I was NOT expecting at all (thanks, dude), and Swanie's still trying to make sense of her twisted destiny.

Can I tie it all together by the end of the week? Let's hope so!

Since Augustin and Swanie have to grapple with demons and their ilk in this grand finale, today's sneak peek offers a taste of hell's madness.

The messenger reappeared unexpectedly at my side, prompting Augustin to thrust himself between us, brandishing his sword as snarls spewed from his lips. The leather-clad devil held both palms outward, his entire body shaking. “Please forgive me, Cursed Destroyer, but the overlord of time and destiny is currently . . . occupied. She has no wish to delay her orgy at your—”

“Who is her current partner, and where are they?” Augustin interrupted, as the word orgy bounced around in my brain. “We are on a tight schedule.”

“She is with the overlord of wisdom and war,” the messenger answered, his reddish eyes abruptly fixated on the Gothic cross Augustin wore around his neck.

My partner spat out a curse. A second later, he tramped off down the glass pathway, pulling me along with him. “Perhaps we can work them against each other,” he muttered under his breath.

“They have ringed his sphere with imps and sirens!” the messenger called after us in a distressed tone.

“So much the better,” Augustin tossed over his shoulder. “This realm needs a strong reminder of who I am.”

Scampering to keep up with him, my lungs began to pant at the stifling air. “He meant Wuotan . . . right? Ashima’s in bed . . . with Wuotan.”

“Not for long,” Augustin growled. He changed course toward a break in the flames to our right, and we entered a rocky pathway that led toward a distant wall of solid golden fires. My eyes could barely make out an archway that must have been the entrance. Comprised of gleaming obsidian, black flames waved between the stones. A collection of writhing creatures gathered around the entrance, vicious growls and clashing teeth echoing along the path.

Terror returned to me as we pressed forward. I averted my eyes to my lover’s face, not wanting to study the demonic legion standing in our way. “Your death . . . can get rid of . . . those creatures . . . right?” I panted.

Augustin continued to stride forward without slowing. “The imps, yes. The sirens, no, for they have neither hearts nor blood. It appears that he has chosen four of them to guard rather than take part in the orgy. Fire, stone, wind, and light. I shall shield you from them as far as I am able, but beware of the light siren. Her element could permanently blind you.”

I squinted toward the gathered fiends, my eyes picking out a naked female whose body shone as brilliantly as the sun. Looking away quickly, I blinked against the resultant blobs that clouded my vision. Augustin shoved something into my left hand—another flaming sword—and said, “Just in case the seductresses distract me before I can carve them to bits.”

Pretty sure we need something fresh & peaceful after that! Here's a photo of me at the Königsee, a gorgeous lake in Bavaria popular with tourists & locals alike. My husband and I rode an e-boat to the far side a couple years ago, and I definitely recommend it, even if you're not much of a hiker.
