Nyanna Tresfall: A Short Bio

Character Bio

Nyanna Tresfall

First Introduced: Shadow of the Sword

Nyanna Tresfall, the only daughter of Thornten High Commander Desirian Tresfall, was born in during the reign of King Temrod and Queen Rhyspa. After losing her mother when she was two to childbirth, as well as losing her younger brother, Nyanna spent a large amount of time following her father through his daily castle tasks.

In doing so, Nyanna was introduced to the royals and quickly befriended Esrin—the youngest Prince and her senior by only six months. Without the guidance of her mother, Desirian allowed Nyanna to attend lessons in court manners with Esrin. This had the unintentional consequence of Esrin bringing back the learnings of his other lessons. Through learning field medical basics, Nyanna discovered a passion for healing and tinctures. She quickly began to spend more time binding wounds, setting bones, and learning medicines when not spending time riding with Esrin or playing chess in their free hours.

Shortly before her seventeenth birthday, Nyanna was in the courtyard when a patrol rode back through the gates. She scrambled out of the way of Marl’s horse and, catching sight of Esrin’s expression, knew something had happened. It wasn’t until she saw another horse being led by a soldier with a bound and unconscious teenager in the saddle that she had the sinking feeling that nothing would ever be the same.

In the time that Laster was a prisoner in Thornten, Nyanna spent hours with a restless Esrin while he paced, ranted, and sat in sullen silences. The internal battle that waged in his mind was only ever let shone to her. On the night that it was announced that the prisoner would be executed rather than ransomed, she found Esrin in the practice court, striking a practice post with enough force to fracture the dull training sword he used. Despite her desperation not to lose her best friend, the closest thing she had to a brother, Nyanna told him that he already knew what needed done.

King Temrod’s health plummeted after the escape of the prisoner and the announcement that his youngest heir, Prince Esrin of Thornten, had turned traitor against his crown. Nyanna, the only one who knew how they had escaped and who had helped in orchestrating the entire thing, tried to keep her head down. She watched her father lose his temper several times, cursing Esrin’s traitorous ways and swearing that he would find him for the King’s peace of mind. However, before Esrin could ever be brought back, King Temrod died in a delirium and Nyanna and Desirian were summoned to speak with Tollien—the new King.

He demanded to know how Nyanna had not seen Esrin’s plans to escape and implied that he thought her a traitor. He demanded that Desirian investigate his daughter with intent to prosecute and, when Desirian hesitated, Nyanna understood—her father had known all along that she was no innocent in Esrin’s escape. But still, he refused the King, announcing that he believed her innocents.

Without proof, Tollien was forced to accept the verdict. However, before the week was out, Desirian had been given a dishonorable discharge and banished to his old family home—a ruin on the edge of town—and stripped of all ranking. This was done on the grounds that he had failed the royal family by not stopping Esrin and, in this blunder, had added to the stresses that had caused the King to fall ill and die.

Sent to the ruins of the old Tresfall home, without word of Esrin or Laster, Nyanna wasn’t certain what to do. However, when they arrived at the home, her father sat her down and asked her to explain all that Esrin had said, to explain what could have driven a Prince into leaving his crown and taking up the cloak of a Ranger instead....
