Here's What I've Been Reading Lately

Hello, lovely readers!
So, I've been reading a book about British hotels and inns with my morning coffee, and it's mostly comprised of excerpts from the letters and memoirs of travelers, so it's fairly fascinating. Here are three of my favorite details so far:
- One traveler describes the large sign stretched over the street between two buildings on either side of the street as an advertisement for the inns, letting passengers and travelers know they could find overnight accommodations in that town. 18th century billboards! I am not frantically considering how I might use this as a grand gesture or comedic moment, or just in any way possible.
- Those who traveled by foot were considered less acceptable guests at inns than those who traveled by coach. Maids and waiters at the inns and hotels turned their noses up at the writer of one letter, who was traveling by foot across England to see the sights at a slower pace. The author of the letter says it's his pedestrian mode of travel, but I always wonder what other issues might have been at play.
- Stage coach travel was ROUGH. One letter writer describes riding on top of the coach and seeking shelter with the baggage, but then being so jostled about in his hiding spot that he climbed off the coach bruised and bloody! And I can't help but hope his cuts don't get infected because no one wants their cause of death to be luggage.
- One of the letters describes the inhabitants of a stage coach, those who traveled inside and outside of the conveyance. For me, it really emphasized how diverse the population of England was at the time and how casually the people writing the letters viewed such diversity.
I love learning new things. What sorts of things are you guys learning about these days?
