CAST YOUR VOTE

“...Choose this day whom you will serve..”

Joshua 24:15

Have you ever noticed how EVERY election is purported to be the most important one ever? Every four years we have to choose between two people, and every four years we are told THIS is the most important election of all time. And if it IS the most important election ever, then that means however you vote, it is the most important vote you will ever cast. Thankfully, I have some good news. Whether this election, last election, or the next election, none of them will ever be the most important you will ever cast.

“And so I insist—and God backs me up on this—that there be no going along with the crowd, no living like the Gentiles do. They’ve refused for so long to deal with God that they’ve lost touch not only with God but with reality itself. They can’t think straight anymore. Feeling no pain, they let themselves go in sexual obsession, addicted to every sort of perversion.”

Ephesians 4:17

A vote is defined as “a formal indication of a choice between two or more candidates or courses of action.” You can vote for political candidates in every election you encounter throughout your life, but as Paul wrote in Ephesians above, the most important vote you ever cast will be the vote you cast with the way you live your life. Every day, you are making a formal indication of your choice, between God, self, or the other guy. (Heaven is a Kingdom, but I guess for this example we'll call it a three party system.) At the beginning and end of each day, who is sitting on the throne of your life?  Are your daily decisions shaped by God’s word? Does your conduct every day reflect a belief and lifestyle based on God’s parameters and guidelines for life?

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:1-2

Tomorrow in the United States, we will vote in a free election to play our part in determining who is the next president of our country. More importantly, however, tomorrow and every day thereafter, we will once again vote with our lives and our conduct to show the world who we are truly voting on. As it says in 2 Corinthians 5:9, “Neither exile nor homecoming is the main thing. Cheerfully pleasing God is the main thing, and that's what we aim to do, regardless of our conditions.” As Christians, we are citizens of Heaven before we are citizens of any country here on earth. There is only one Savior, and He is neither a donkey nor an elephant, He is a lion and a lamb. No matter who sits in the White House, He will still be on the throne. May we live a life surrendered to Him, in pursuit of deeper relationship with Christ, and greater reflection of Him in our lives each moment. May we reflect His love and kindness to those around us, even, and especially, to those most difficult to love. May we, as it says in Hebrews, “lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

For those who are in Christ, every day is voting day.
