Happy Sunday!

Business idea: QR codes for sports highlights

Today's idea comes courtesy of Jack Appleby (@JuiceboxCA on Twitter), though I can't find the original tweet, so he may have deleted it.

Imagine this: you just watched Steelers rookie Chase Claypool haul in a 84 yard TD & a QR code pops up on your TV letting you instantly share the clip on Twitter. This reality isn't as far off as you think. Let's call it InstaQR.

Let's talk about 3 things, the technology, launching it, & scaling.

First, the technology is quite simple. Dozens of tools today let you generate, track, & change QR codes for free. Simply set the link you want the QR code to go to, & begin sharing. Generating a link to tweet something is even easier, since tweet drafts are associated with unique links. Here's an example. InstaQR's software could automate all of this, by downloading clips tweeted by the NFL or marked by an announcer, & generating a unique QR code for that highlight. InstaQR wouldn't have rights to any content, so you'd want to brand

To launch InstaQR, you'd need to get one small TV network or show on board. Networks are desperate for engagement, so this wouldn't be as hard as it sounds. Start with smaller sports & networks like boxing & DAZN. Most networks are losing viewers to social media & Netflix, but by engaging sports fan on those social media, they can increase their brand awareness & convert new paying subscribers. Prove you have product that works & increases engagement & it's a no-brainer for any network.

Scaling: once you have your first network on board, it's easy to move up the ladder. Larger networks are fighting not to lose market share to smaller ones. Once you have a case study for how many social media impressions InstaQR got DAZN, all the big networks will want in on the action. The key to scaling will be integrating easily with network's existing infrastructure. NBC doesn't want to complicate their staff's jobs & risk embarrassing mix-ups or typos.

Sports aren't the only use case for InstaQR either. The same idea would work for sharing clips while watching Netflix or attending a concert. QR codes are crazy underutilized (especially in the U.S.) & InstaQR would be on the cutting edge of their adoption.

Reply & let me know: would you tweet sports highlights from a QR code?
