Whenever You Wake is your Morning

I was born a star.
I know it now, but didn't at the time.
You were born a star too. If you only look, you will see it.
I was different from my siblings. They are lighter-skinned, I am dark. We are all intelligent, but I was the only creative. They were outgoing, I was the introvert. These days we have switched. I am now outgoing and most of them are private people.
Anyway, as a kid, I loved to write and create houses. Like seriously, I would build houses out of cardboard boxes (what we call cartons) and then play in them with people made of stone. When I was not doing that, my nose would be in a book. At night when we are sent to bed, I would write. These were the ways I could serve my introverted nature. I had three tight friends while in Nazareth (primary) school, we used to call ourselves the Fantastic Four - Doris, Ndidi, Ifeoma and I. I am still in touch with them all.
By the time I entered boarding school at the age of ten, I discovered that I had a way with friends. Like I wouldn't have all the friends in the world, but my close friends were ride or die! I honed my talents some more here, excelling in Technical drawing in school, while writing for a bit before I dumped it to focus on studies. Queen's College was such a competitive school academically. I hear it still is.
I moved on to the university, where my aunt told me that I must graduate with a first class or nothing. I tried. God knows I did. I was quickly told by lecturers and students alike that a first class in Architecture is for God, and I shouldn't bother. I paid them no mind, I studied like my life depended on it. I eventually graduated with a 4.35 GPA out of a possible 5, and was top of my class. I studied architecture at the great Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. There is a backstory to how I got my admission. Maybe I will tell you someday.
My father was stuck on me attending a Federal university so he got me admission to FUTA for my Masters. I was scared of change, didn't want to go and have to find new friends and learn new systems. I stayed back at Ekpoma.
Good thing I did. My husband was there. We got to become best friends after being paired for research work on several occasions. We never dated while in school for our masters. I was heartbroken, after just calling off a 4-year relationship. He was having the time of his life, as the new guy on the block. We were friends and that was all. At least at that time.
I graduated, attended NYSC and was offered a job immediately by one of the architects from my alma-mater. i excelled there for three years and then moved on. He was nothing short of excellent to me and my family. We are still in touch. I moved on to do a stint at Airtel (then called Zain). And from there to another architectural firm, bigger, with more exposure. I stayed there seven years.
One day, I resigned to join my husband in his architectural firm that was now ready for my skills.
