Breaking Freelance #004 - Mentor for a day 🧙‍♂️

(1.5-minute reading time)

I've asked a few of my friends "If someone gives you only one advice, teaches you only one lesson, could you consider that person a mentor?"

The consensus was that a mentorship should be a lasting relationship, and more importantly, it's with someone you trust, so you can put their advice into practice without doing trial and error yourself.

But - I had an experience that's sort of an exemption from a rule...

l've met this person when he was hired as chief of finance with a company I was working with to sort all sorts of problems they were facing, one of them being late payments to me among a bunch of others.

He had this street smarts type of attitude and zero fucks given type of humour and we kinda clicked with our banter. One day he invited me for after-work drinks, our main topic were untrustworthy (aka scum) people because of which we ended up meeting, and he was such a stark contrast to everyone else I've met before who dealt in finance and had such unencumbered and relaxed attitude towards business, and life in general that made me very curious.

I had to ask - is there a secret?

He said, somewhat jokingly:

"You see, I like my beauty sleep...
...and I don't want to be afraid of a 2AM Knock on the door in my life. If someone is banging on my door, I know they are here to ask for help and not to break my legs, because I do right by everyone. So I sleep like a baby."

We hangout only few times after that, and then I found out that he lost a short battle to cancer, that he kept secret from everyone apart from his family. I didn't know him log enough to call him a friend, but I like to think we would be if he was still around.

But I often remember him, because I like my beauty sleep too.

I wanted to share this with you, maybe it will help you sleep better also? 😌

Cheers.

T.
