[BF #047] πŸ”— Don't break the chain!

I got this advice from Jerry Seinfeld.

I wanted to get good at writing jokes, naturally, when I decided that I want to do stand up comedy more often - and this is when I got advice from Jerry how to do itβ€”and not just writing jokes.

This sounds like Jerry himself called me up and told me how to write my material, but no - I do not know Jerry personally, unfortunately. I read this in an article about how he writes his material.

The basic idea is to do something you want to improve or get good at every day and add an "X" to the calendar. Soon enough, you will have a chain of X's, you will not want to break it, and then you just keep going. Not breaking the chain!

You can not sit down and write a whole 30min set in one go. You can't learn how to play the guitar or write a book in one day. But you can do it for 5 minutes a day. And it will be longer than 5 minutes - because the idea is to do what you enjoy.

I've learned, this productivity hack works for basically anything that I want to work on for a more extended period. It is how I got first 30 newsletters in a month, and I've used this approach over the years on so many things, from my stand up to my work, building websites and growing my company, even to read more. Read something on Kindle for 5 minutes a day. That comes down to around ten books per year.

Think for a moment about what action would make the most profound impact on your life if you worked it every day. That is the action I recommend you put on your "Seinfeld calendar."

I've made a printable one page PDF for 2021, that will be on my wall to remind me to put an X on it every day. You can download it here if you wish to use mine:

You don't have to start today - but do it if you can.

And - Don't break the chain!

My plan is to post daily on all my networks to help people in their career and answer their questions in Slack and Discord. At least one per day!

What will you do daily?
