[BF #028] 😷 lies we tell ourselves

Nov 01, 2020 4:57 pm

(1-minute read)

In the interest of complete honesty, this email is infused with a slight hangover from last nights' gin 😬.

A friend of mine asked me a few days ago "How are you staying normal with not going out of the house almost at all?", and was an interesting question, especially in view of upcoming second lockdown, since I didn't see myself as "normal." 🤣

I had to think about it a bit to distil the answer.

But, it's basically just daily practice of being grateful for what I have, instead of focusing on what is currently going on. Reminding myself - I'm working, healthy, with food in my fridge and roof over my head, living with a spouse that doesn't annoy me. (I annoy her, that's a whole other topic... 😬 🤣)

I just wanted to give a few words of caution;

even the most experienced freelancers, when faced with a long period of no jobs/projects, will get the "pink glasses" to view the permanent employment with. Maybe you've thought something along the lines of:

  • "Maybe this time it will be different."
  • "I have more experience now; I can handle it."
  • "I will not be bothered by bosses and politics."

And that's fine. I've said the same lies to myself before.

One thing to take into consideration at this time is that the world is not stable as it was, and the economy is very uncertain. If you are struggling to find freelance work - but have an offer on the table for something permanent - it's not a bad thing to consider all the options. Take shelter until things can go back to normal. You will not be less of a freelancer or a traitor to your principles.

I hope you don't have a headache this Sunday. Like SOME OF US 😂

Speak soon.
