Staring out across the courtyard, Andrea admired all the budding starlings, who climbed the jungle gym and swung on the swings. The branches of tall trees cast shade over the playing children. Although their cheeks were blushing from the exertion of recess, they scurried about anyhow. The planet Stacia was a great melting pot, where civilizations from different planets came for asylum from hostile civilizations. Earth humans and their knowledge of the English language made it easy to assimilate to life on any planet, as it was mostly the primary language. 

Earth was the last planet where most of its inhabitants were not privy to life in outer space. It was the perfect place for aliens to start over should their time on Stacia only serve as a transitional period, which for many it was. Andrea had enjoyed her time as an astronaut, but once she lost touch with Earth, and they assumed she’d been sucked into a black hole of which she would never return, she saw it as an opportunity to start over anew. Taking a job on Stacia as a teacher, she taught the children English and other Earth customs to prepare them for their future space travels. 

Like many afternoons, they played outside after their day’s lessons, waiting for their parents to pick them up. Unlike other days however, Andrea felt a bit of sadness swelling inside of her. Tears pressed against the back of her eyelids, knowing it was the last time she’d see these children. The ambassador to the Prime Minister of Garilia had hired Andrea to work as a governess and private tutor to his only daughter Nivia. Although she hadn’t yet met the ambassador himself, she’d heard quite a bit about him. He was statuesque and refined, having high expectations for his child. Wanting Nivia to learn as much as she could about English and Earth humans, he’d sought out for one of the best instructors in the galaxy. Andrea had come very highly recommended by a Garilian she’d met during her time on Stacia. A part of her felt uncertain she was up for the challenge, but kept her head high anyway. It was a great opportunity, where she would be earning twice the salary.
