Maia, Braden, and Harper... how it started
Don’t tell him now, don’t tell him now, don’t tell him now.
I can’t tell him now. Not now. Not when we’re heading down a hill in a truck older than dirt with no airbags, seat belts that barely work, and brakes that take stopping as a mere suggestion.
But I can’t help it. It’s bubbling over inside of me.
Fuck.
“Braden?”
“Yeah?”
“I think I’m pregnant.”
His head snaps toward me. He’s staring directly at me, eyes wide, mouth agape.
My eyes flit to the intersection we’re heading toward then back to Braden.
“Braden.”
The intersection. Back to Braden.
“What?”
The intersection. Braden.
“Brakes!” I yell.
He jolts his head forward and stares in horror.
He slams his foot into the brake pedal.
I brace one hand on the dash while the other is draped protectively over my stomach.
Well, at least if we die in a car crash right now, I won’t have to worry about my mother killing me.
Thankfully, for once, the brakes do their job expertly as if they know they have to.
Braden and I breathe sighs of relief.
I look down at my stomach and yank my hand off, still not wanting to believe it’s true, though I know it is.
and how it's going in Endless Love...
I put my hand over the pages and look at my not-so-little girl. “You’ve had a lot of questions lately about what things were like when I was pregnant with you, and we want to talk to you about that.”
“What do you mean?”
“We love you and we’ve loved you since we knew about you, but that time in our lives was hard,” Braden says.
I take Harper’s hand. “We were scared and didn’t know what we were doing. While we embraced it, we weren’t prepared for it. There was a learning curve. It wasn’t always easy, and there are memories throughout that time that weren’t our happiest. We struggled. But we loved you and we chose you. It was just messy sometimes.”
Braden’s eyes turn glassy. “I made a lot of mistakes. Some you know about, and some I wish I didn’t have to admit to.”
“And I said a lot of things I wish I could’ve taken back. I was stubborn and angry and terrified sometimes. We both made mistakes along the way. Sometimes your questions are hard for us to answer. They don’t always show things in the prettiest light. But at the end of the day, the answers matter less than the love.”
Braden turns to the page that’s filled with photos of us holding her and snuggling together right when she was born. “We’ve always loved you. That love is what matters.”
Harper swallows, tears welling in her eyes. “And you loved each other?”
Braden and I look at each other, and damn it all, tears form in my eyes too. “We did.”
“Promise?”
Braden wraps his arm around her back and kisses her head. “Promise.”
It always comes back to them...
