“Imma wake,” I mumbled.
“This is as far as I take you,” he said. I nodded, not really understanding what he was saying, as the car pulled up to a stop. His door opened followed by footsteps on what sounded like gravel. That was weird, I couldn’t think of where there’d be gravel in Sacramento. Maybe in the industrial zones, or on the outskirts of the city.
The door swung out, and my eyes opened in shock, as I fell out of the car and landed on my hands and knees on the ground. Which judging by the rocks that were pressed painfully into my knees and palms, was indeed gravel. I tried to stand, but my legs didn’t want to work, and before I could manage it, the car drove away.
It was dark out, so dark I could see more stars up in the sky than I ever dreamed possible under the lights of Sacramento. I gave up on trying to stand and rolled over on my back. The stars were beautiful and seemed to stretch on forever, and I tried to remember the last time I’d even noticed them. It wasn’t just the bright lights of Sacramento that made them hard to see. It was the fact I never took time for anything beyond finding the next party.
Now here I was. I had no clue where I was, or why that guy would have dropped me here, and the more I tried to make sense of it the more sleep tugged at my consciousness. Finally unable to fight it, I slept.
