We drove along a few miles more and went through what he said was another small town out here in the middle of nowhere.

“There’s a few of them around here. Some of them were bigger at one time, others never were. I’m not sure what made people move to this area. I guess they were just searching for their little piece of land, and this is where they decided was a good place,” Erik said, and focused on the road. While I focused on his profile.

He was a good-looking guy, and the more time I spent around him, the more I wondered why he was still single. Or maybe a guy like him didn’t fit in around here? I wasn’t sure, but I was definitely enjoying the day. We drove a while longer until he turned onto a dirt road I wouldn’t have even noticed if I’d been driving. He slowed a little, but not enough to avoid the large bumps and potholes he seemed to enjoy flying over.

“Hang on, city!” he yelled before he gunned the engine, making the rear end slide out, spraying dirt and gravel to the side of us. I reached for the bar above my head and clung to it as he laughed like a madman.

“This is crazy!” I yelled back as I laughed as hard as he did. It was fun, and it was something I’d never done. He slowed as we came up to a curve in the road and continued until we ended up at a large pipe with a valve on top.

“Wait here. I’ll just check it real quick.”

“Not on your life. I want to see what it is you do,” I said and hopped out of the truck. He walked over to where a steady stream of water was flowing from the pipe, and from here I could see it led to the lake above us. He took some measurements, made a few adjustments, and walked over closer to me.

He slipped his fingers between mine and squeezed them as we stood and watched the water flow downstream. “So, what do you think?” he asked with a grin.

“I think there’s more to you than meets the eye, Mr. Thorne.” He looked at me with a warm smile just before he leaned in and kissed me. And once again, my damn traitorous heart skipped a beat, as it beat out a rhythm to his name. Erik . . . Erik . . . Erik. Dammit.
