A peep into my world of art and travel

Apr 27, 2022 4:01 pm

Hello ,

All my professional life has been about reporting the arts, culture and travel. In the past few weeks, I have spent some time re-immersing myself in them, writing reviews and articles and exploring some of the sites and attractions in Lagos.

It’s great to see everyday life gradually returning to pre-pandemic normal. With this at the back of my mind, I thought it would be a good idea to focus the next couple of newsletters on some of the other works I do – in addition to the Bishop Crowther Project.

At the end of March, I went to see an exhibition of ceramics, curated by Mathew Oyedele at the Yusuf Grillo Gallery of the Yaba College of Technology and featuring mostly young artists, some of them graduates of the college. The exhibition reminded me of the massive pottery section at the Jos National Museum, all collected from different parts of the country.

One of the highlights of April for me was having my Nollywood-themed article in Virgin Atlantic’s inflight magazine. Published in the ‘Location Scout’ section, it aims to promote the tourism and hospitality sector of the featured city (in this case Lagos). Here’s a link to the story:

And talking about Destination Lagos, I finally had time over the Easter holidays to read a book I’ve always had. I wrote a review on my Medium page:

With a group of researchers and journalists at the historic Koso Town near Bara

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the launch of an album by performance poet and editor, Iquo DianaAbasi. I previewed the event

Same weekend, we woke up to the news of the passing of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III (1939 – 2022). That event brough back memories of my visits to Oyo, last May, to a town called Bara, where Alaafins of the Old Oyo Empire were buried.

I did a Twitter thread of that journey, and here’s the link if you’d like to know more about that hallowed ground:

I haven’t been reading novels lately, but I enjoyed reading this review of Chimeka Garricks’ A Broken People’s Playlist (by Sesede Simeon), which is published on my website

April has also been a month of tours and travels, either for field research or in my side hustle as a city guide. It’s always fun and enriching showing visitors around some of the most pleasurable attractions Lagos has to offer.

And talking about travel: you may like to check out my latest travel book -- Nine Degrees North: Backpacking Stories Across Nigeria. It’s a collection of 25 of my most stand-out experiences on the road as a travel writer. It is now available as an E-Book on Paystack. This button takes you right there

Expect more arts, culture and travel-related gist next week.
