Hello ,

Last month, we shared the good news that a short film we made for the crowther project -- in the footsteps of bishop crowther [the journey so far] – had been selected for the irepresent international documentary film festival, holding between 17 and 20 march 2022.

In the past week, organisers have announced both the opening and closing films for the festival, now in its 12th edition. The theme for the year is: Unfiltered: African Stories. Stories From Africa.

“The idea is to focus on how Africa is being represented or otherwise by filmmakers and storytellers who engage her issues,” according to a statement by the festival’s Programme Directorate.

It further stated that about 70 films (from 28 countries) will screen during the festival. The film President by Camilla Nielsson will open the festival at Terra Kulture, on 17 March.

Based on the political situation in Zimbabwe President “is a riveting and epic reminder that, while specifics may differ, the fight for democracy is of universal relevance”.

The festival’s main venue is Freedom Park, Broad Street. Some of the films will also screen at the Art Factory, in Bariga.

The festival’s closing film will be Night Nursery, directed by Moumouni Sanou (b. 1987). Based on the lives of sex workers and activities at a social centre in Burkina Faso’s Bobo Dioulasso, the film won the grand prize at FESPACO (Pan-African Film and Television Festival) 2021.

PS: The screening schedule is yet to be released. As soon as we have it, we’ll share the same with you.

We're planning our next road trip/ field research to Ibadan and Osoogun, Bishop Crowther's famed home town, later this month. This should last anywhere between 7 - 10 days (22 - 30 March). As on previous journeys, we continue to count on your donations to make this possible. While we require cash donations, we also are happy to receive in-kind support (accommodation, logistics, equipment -- to mention a few).
