Early in January, we went out to conduct a vox pop: we asked Nigerians a few basic questions on the subject of our documentary film project, Bishop Crowther.

Do you know Samuel Ajayi Crowther?

Who was he?

Where was he buried?

To do this, and to provide a bit of clue to the respondents, we set up gear just beside the fence of the Cathedral Church of Christ at the Lagos Marina, and about 10 feet from the fence, behind which the marble bust of the bishop could be seen easily.

We picked 20 passersby randomly who were happy to take up the challenge. Some of their answers made us laugh. Some raised our eyebrows in disbelief, and yet others were downright shocking.

“Bishop Ajayi Crowther happens to be one of our colonial masters during the era of the British,” one said.

And said another confidently: “Samuel Ajayi Crowther was a motivational speaker.”

One or two of the respondents didn’t waste time. They didn’t know who Crowther is or was, and quickly moved on.

At the end of each Q & A session, we provided the answers and went into a bit more detail with a few others who wanted to know more about the subject – and the film project.

We soon packed up and left, pondering how It was that the now-generation couldn’t be bothered with past historical events and personalities. We hope the documentary, when it is finally ready, will spark an interest in the different histories of Nigeria.
